Some history:

Apifera has been taking in elder/special needs creatures since 2004. In 2016, Apifera and all the animals relocated from Oregon to mid coast Maine - a six day journey with 33 creatures! Our new farm property came with one very sweet little barn. That summer, out of our own funds, we built barn number two. But we need more barn-to help more animals, and because our second barn gets filled up quickly when we add 12 tons of hay!

Once in Maine, Apifera Farm became a 501[c][3] in order to continue the work we've been doing since 2004: adopting elderly/special needs creatures. But we also aim to share our animals with elderly/special needs people. The little ambassador of love, Opie the goat, already makes regular therapy visits to elder facilities. Pino the donkey is our travelling healer and many of the other animals partake in farm visits. We also now have an Elder Cat Suite where we adopt in old cats out of the local shelter.

I also have been in communication with the Animal Welfare people of the State, including the state vet, and Apifera is now a place they can call to see if we can take in animals in need. The new barn will help with that becasue quarantine is very important when bringing in any creature-especially negelected animals.

Getting this incredible opportunity from J&J Stanley Foundation is ....a gift out of the heavens, and a validation of our years of work.  Please, let's not waste it. We need to raise $10,000-we can do this! What an opportunity for us as we grow Apifera to help more animals-but also help elders and special needs people who will benefit from animal visits and hands on encounters with these natural healers.

Details: The barn will be partially built by the same builder we used last year-he will put up framing, sliding doors and roof. We will put up the siding to save on money. The expected cost of the 24 x 24 barn is $25-$30,000 and we plan to build it in late spring. The barn will allow us to have additional elder goats and creatures, but also have a better quarantine and hospice area for incoming creatures; it will also take pressure off the second barn when the hay is brought in. The new barn will be connected to the other barn which will also have many benefits especially in winter.  You can see the barn we built last year below.
