Hi I’m Aoife, and I'm a 20 (nearly 21) year old transmasculine non-binary person trying to raise money for my top surgery. I’ve been out for nearly two years now.
I got my referral for the Laurel’s Gender Identity Clinic in Exeter a few months back after over 6 months of waiting after my GP appointment. My referral letter, whilst exciting and positive, explained that there would be around a 24 month waiting list just for my initial appointment, with a further wait until I could receive treatment. This waiting list is affecting my physical and mental health, as my wait for top surgery is looking to be about another 4/5 years or longer.
My physical dysphoria is getting worse and negatively effecting my mental health and binding my chest is starting to give me a lot of back, rib and chest pain. This pain has been getting increasingly worse over the last one and a half years that I've been binding for. It's advised to bind for no longer than 8 hours a day and to not use a binder daily, but as I feel too uncomfortable to leave my house (or sometimes even stay in it) without binding, between work and university I bind for far longer than this everyday.
I am unable to handle the long waiting list that the NHS is suggesting as my mental and physical health continue to deteriorate. I have managed to save up part of the cost to seek top surgery privately whilst working part time at uni, but as the cost is looking to be around £8000 I don’t have the means to be funding this myself. Being able to pay for this life-changing surgery will truly make the world of difference for my physical and mental well-being. It’ll give me a quality of life I’ve never had before, and will alleviate so much of the painful dysphoria that I experience daily.
