Friends & Family:
I am asking for any of our friends and family to help my niece and her family. My niece Caitlin has a daughter named Kali who was diagnosed today with kidney cancer. This was much unexpected to our whole family. I am reaching out to each of you for your help because the treatment and extended stay at Texas Children’s Hospital is going to be very costly to them.
This is very important to me because Kali holds a special place in my heart. She is the sweetest little girl you could ever meet. She is always coming up to hug everyone and helping take care of her little brother Bentley. While we were at the hospital my wife and I were talking and I remembered when she was two years old she came over to our house and I was holding her in the back yard. That is when she saw the moon for the first time. We looked at the moon together for at least an hour pointing at it and listening to her say moon, moon over and over again. After that night for the next year every time she saw me even if it was during the day she would start saying moon, moon and pointing to the sky. Little things like this bring us close to the kids in our life. Over the last two years every time she was coming over to our house she would go and change into a Texas Longhorn shirt to wear just for me. You do not have to be blood relatives or even kin for a child like this to steel your heart. Please help us in saving her life. Below is a detailed list of events that this sweet little girl had to go through today and what she has to face in the next months.
On the morning of June 23, 2014 Kali was taken to the emergency room at St. Luke’s in the Woodlands. She was taken in with a high fever and stomach pains. Kali had been running a fever since the day before and none of the medicine she was given helped reduced the fever. Once they were at the emergency room the doctor ordered x-rays. The x-ray showed a mass on her kidney so they call for an ambulance and rushed her to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. At Texas Children’s the doctor ordered a CAT scan. The CAT scan revealed a large tumor that has basically consumed her kidney and a stem of the tumor had started growing up a vein that supplied her liver and kidneys with blood. The stem had grown up the vein all the way to her heart. By 6pm the doctor’s took her in and removed some fluid from around her lungs and put in a port for chemotherapy and blood tests. The doctors have called this a WILM’s tumor which is a form of kidney cancer found in kids. Kali is going to start chemotherapy first thing in the morning and will be going through an aggressive cycle of chemo for the next month. The tumor right now is too large to remove without risking her life. The doctors are hoping that this aggressive cycle will reduce the size of the tumor enough that it will be safe to remove the tumor in the next month or so. If the doctors are able to reduce the tumor and remove it then she will have a great chance of making a full recovery after all cycles of the chemotherapy are completed. Kali could be taking chemo for the next year pending on how her body and the cancer reacts to the chemo treatments.
