Anya, brain tumour surviver

Anya, wonder woman and brain tumour survivor

Those that know Anya, know that she is an amazing woman.  A bright, bubbly and caring friend, a loving mum to her beautiful daughter Lyla, 5 and partner to Andy.

In early 2017 Anya started suffering from severe headaches. After seeing several specialists, an MRI and CT scan she was diagnosed with a very large brain tumour – an acoustic neuroma.

The good news was the tumour appeared to be benign, the not so good news was that it was large.  Given its size radiotherapy was not an option as it was already applying significant pressure on nerves and brain structure.  There were also very real risks with this type of surgery and among other possibilities, losing her hearing in her left ear was a certainty.

Anya was fortunately able to hold off surgery for a month, so that she could take her daughter Lyla to her first week of school.

On the 2nd October, Anya had her surgery with very little in the way of guaranteed outcomes.  Although the initial surgery went well, there were post surgery complications, leading to two further procedures. She was put into an induced sleep to allow her body to recover.

For her family and friends across the word this was a very anxious time. After 5 days Anya was carefully brought out of the induced sleep. She showed small improvements every day and came out of ICU 10 days later.  But this was just the beginning of her recovery.

The outcome was so much worse than anyone expected or hoped for and following a one month stint in intensive rehabilitation hospital, Anya has now sourced a rehabilitation team locally to continue the physio, occupational and speech therapy.  It is likely to be a long recovery.

None of this was part of the original plan…there has not only been a huge emotional impact but a significant financial impact for Anya and her family and they still have such a long way to go.

I know that many friends, family and community members close to home and across the world have been looking for a way that they can help support Anya, Andy and Lyla.  Any financial help you can provide is one of the greatest ways that we can all help this beautiful family and get our wonder woman back up and going again.
