Return to Antarctica | 25 Years

Donation protected
I'm returning to Antarctica to dive under the ice after 25 years!

In 1992, I was a graduate student in marine science collecting video and samples on how sea life was affected by ice bergs scouring their seafloor habitat. The experience inspired me to pursue a career in science + art.

This time, I'm going as a 2017 grantee of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Antarctic Artists and Writers Program (AAWP), I'm deeply grateful to have been chosen to be a part of this year's cohort. The creative products that my collaborator and I are producing are going to connect audiences to science, art and nature via some inspiring and awesome pathways.

Check out the Grant Award in detail HERE!

I will be drawing, painting, photographing and writing above AND below water during this year's Antarctic Quest. I'll document the similarities and differences to my visit in 1992. Most importantly, I will be giving back to the place that gave me my mission in life 25 years ago — connecting others with the beauty and wonder of nature through science and art.

As an artist in the NSF AAWP program, the government provides me with the physical and technological support to thrive in the most extreme environment on Earth. However, I must be financially responsible for the equipment, supplies and resources I require to succeed in my creative goals.

This GoFundMe campaign helps cover the costs of going on this quest. The $6500 goal covered the dive equipment (dry suit, underwater camera, dive charters). Thank you supporters!

Additional funds will be used for travel expenses. It is no small thing to get from the middle of the Pacific Ocean (Oahu, Hawaii) to the US Antarctic Base of McMurdo Station (Ross Island, Antarctica). NSF pays for the airfare and two suitcases, but I must pay for excess baggage, and my own room and board while in New Zealand waiting for a military flight to the Ice (which may be delayed due to weather).

I'll be deployed from Oct 14-Dec 1, 2017. That's seven weeks of art supplies, diving equipment and winter clothing.

This quest has been a lifetime in the making, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart (and the world) for helping me connect others to the undersea world of Antarctica through science and art.
