Anna's Emergency College Fund

My name is Anna Vuu, and I am set to attend Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia in less than two weeks. I am an honors student, and  have completed the rigorous IB program to become an IB Diploma recipient (whew!). I have recieved awards for excellence in public speaking and debate. I spent most of my time in high school crafting my art portfolio and creating a more inclusive community with my involvement in the leadership of the Queer Straight Alliance. Most excitingly, I am the proud founder and president of the first ever Asian Student Association at my high school.

However, two weeks before my orientation, I have discovered that my family will not be able to help pay my share of tuition for this year. My parents emigrated to the US from Vietnam in pursuit of opportunities. Neither attended college—I will be the first. They’ve raised me and my younger brother mostly in the South Bronx. I am extremely grateful to Agnes Scott College for awarding me both merit and non merit based scholarships, grants and Stafford loans as financial aid. My/my family's share of the cost per semester this year is $3,860. Even on a month by month payment plan, we would have to pay $965. My family does not have any extra money and does not have the option to take out loans- my father has never even been able to get a credit card, and my mother is in debt.

This is where I need your help. I have an extended deadline of August 8th, 2017 to pay my tuition for this semester. I only need to raise $7,720 to attend college this entire year—and just $3,860 by August 8th. I have worked hard to get into a good city high school, to get into college and I will continue to do so. I plan to pick up part-time babysitting jobs and apply for additional scholarships in order to help my family pay for my remaining years of school and to cover the cost of books and basic living needs. It is hard for me to ask, but I need help to get there. Right now that $3,860 stands between me and starting college—and the $7,720 for the year.

I am extremely grateful for any assistance. Thank you all for reading my story, and thank you for anything you can do to help me go to college. Your investment in me will be worthwhile—I will make sure of it by paying it forward in the future when I am able.

More about my family: My mother is a nail technician, and my father handles maintenance at Central Park Conservancy, a job he got after a period of unemployment after a layoff. My little brother is currently attending public school. Here, we are attending an awards ceremony hosted by my high school.

More about me and my art:

More about my roommate: The girl on the far left is one of my best friends. Sadly, she moved away to Georgia just before senior year started, but the universe granted us acceptances to the same college. We are so excited to be reunited at Agnes Scott!
