Animal Rebellion Ireland Pig Farming Campaign

Donation protected
Animal Rebellion Ireland is a wholly volunteer organisation campaigning for a transition to a just and sustainable plant-based food system and an eventual end to animal farming and fishing. We rely on donations to fund all of our actions and campaigns.

We campaign for individuals like Ben, pictured above, who was rescued from the commercial pig farming industry and is now living his best life on a sanctuary in Ireland. We would love to see every animal enjoying the comfort and freedom that Ben has, surrounded by fellow pigs and people who love and care for him.

Unfortunately, that is not the case and the overwhelming majority of pigs in Ireland lead lives of suffering and despair, enclosed in factory farms where they are viewed only as commercial units and their most basic needs as sentient creatures go unmet.

In 2023, Animal Rebellion collaborated with the National Animal Rights Association (NARA) on an undercover investigation into the Irish Pig Industry. We found animals locked for life in dark, filthy conditions, many immobilised and suffering from serious untreated injuries; some were too weak to stand. Pigs are often kept in sow stalls (legal in Ireland although banned in many countries) and farrowing crates that don't allow mother pigs to turn around or even walk.

Approximately 3 million pigs are slaughtered per year in Ireland. Nearly all of them are intensively raised on factory farms, out of sight and unrecognised as the source of so much of the food we consume. These factory farms are known to be terrible for animal welfare, the environment, workers rights and human health, and yet we continue to allow them to exist and even expand in Ireland.

Animal agriculture as a whole is the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland. The EPA reports that Ireland's agriculture sector was directly responsible for 38.4% of our GHG emissions in 2022, mainly methane from farm animals, nitrogen fertiliser and manure management. Animal farming also presents serious risks for antibiotic resistance and the transmission of zoonotic diseases such as Covid19.

In 2024, we will continue to campaign for an end to the pig farming industry and we are asking for your help to shine a light into these dark places. You can view the video from our first investigation here (warning - contains scenes of animal suffering):

It is vital that Ireland's food system supports ethical, sustainable and fair trade plant-based agriculture in order for animals, the planet and people to thrive. Your donation can help us campaign for that better future.
