The Fire
At 2:00 a.m. Thursday morning, June 4th fire broke out at Door of Hope Rescue Mission and severely damaged the roof and interior of the building. By God's grace, everyone survived without harm, however the Mission is in dire need of emergency assistance to repair the building and purchase furniture and equipment as well as other supplies to restore the Mission to operation. As a result all of the residents have been displaced, as the building is no longer inhabitable. Door of Hope's closure represents a tragic loss to the community during this time of social unrest in Chicago and removes a critical resource for the homeless residents in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Mission
David Pendleton (pictured below) serves as the Executive Director, as he has since August 2010 when he was selected by the Board of Directors. My husband, Andy and I have known David for over five years, and he is a man of deep commitment, the highest integrity and a profound desire to nurture, challenge and grow those around him. His desire is to see the lives of the men at Door of Hope truly transformed, so that they can live to their fullest potential.
Door of Hope Rescue Mission has been serving the homeless population on the South side of Chicago since November 1954. The Mission is a transformation partner supplying transitional housing to homeless men in Chicago's Washington Park community. The Mission provides meals, showers and multipurpose spaces in a clean and safe environment. It has been housed at its current location since 1975 and has provided hope and a template for restorative living over the past 65 years.
Since its inception, the Mission has served hundreds of thousands of meals and provided clothing as well as social, medical and vocational service access through their partnered service providers. The Mission is faith-based and practical for those who truly want change. The focus has never been limited to or even rooted in the temporal but in the eternal. For what would it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul?
The Costs
Given the extensive fire damage to the roof and interior spaces of the Mission, significant funding must be raised for the building to be inhabitable. Without this funding the Mission does not have the resources to continue their vital work in the Washington Park community. Once funds are raised, the Mission will be able to renovate the property and continue to offer its crucial services to homeless men on the South side of Chicago. The fundraising goal represents the current estimate of what will be required to renovate the building after the fire, however this figure could be revised as the full extent of the damage is evaluated.
