Student/Faculty Research 2018

Donation protected
For several years, I have taken Grove City College students (like Abby Noll '18 pictured above) with me to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where I am a guest investigator, to do research with me and my colleagues there.  WHOI is considered to be one of the top oceanographic institutions in the world.  This experience has helped prepare and propel GCC students on to exciting graduate school and internship opportunities at schools like MIT, Vanderbilt, WHOI, UVA, Penn State, Princeton, the University of Alabama, Ohio State, and Boston University.  My students have also gone on to positions in high tech industries and business.

This year, a committee of my colleagues once again deemed my research proposal regarding marine organism biomechanics and ecology worthy of funding but due to scarce research funds at GCC, this summer's opportunity has only been partially funded.   The shortfall is $6,500, which my student, junior mechanical engineering major Evan Lundburg '19, and I need to raise.  Evan has been working in my lab at GCC this year and has great potential in the area of scientific research and is planning on graduate school in the future.  Graduate schools expect their applicants to have these sorts of experiences prior to applying.  I'd like to ask you to consider helping to keep this amazing opportunity going for Grove City College students.  It is good for my students, my research program and the College.

The work also provides data for my 8 - 12 research students during the school year and has resulted in about 40 - 50 original research projects for GCC students.  In the past 3 years my lab's work has been part of 5 peer reviewed publications, numerous professional conference presentations and my research students have won 1st place twice and 2nd place once in the last three years of the Regional Scientific Consortium Symposium at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie, PA.  We've collaborated with scientists at UMich, Georgia Tech, SeaWorld, NJIT, WHOI, and Harvard, among other institutions.

I hope you'll consider contributing to make it possible for Evan and me to conduct our research at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution this summer, and support the continued involvement of GCC in scientific discovery and investment in students' lives.  I'll be contributing $100 myself, and hope many of you will join the effort!
