HOBY WLC Chicago Trip

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

Last weekend, I joined 147 sophomores at a life-changing seminar in Orange, CA held by the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (HOBY). I was surprised but honored when I learned that I was the student selected to represent my high school for the weekend-long event, and when I arrived, any skepticism I had had about going was laid to rest. I immediately got to witness and be a part of powerful, thought-provoking presentations and discussions that were consistent throughout the weekend. Several motivational speakers and many current leaders from California were invited to speak and be panelists to answer our questions. We also got to be involved in SoCal community service projects like creating blankets for the homeless. Best of all, I met lots of other driven teen leaders from my area and made amazing friends and local connections. All of this gave me real insight into the life of a leader and motivated me to make a change at home.

Upon departure, all of the students were asked to make a difference by completing 100 hours of community service each. I plan to do this by helping to revive the Key Club at Ramona High next year and being a leader in its community service projects, as well as continuing to support my church through music. Along with this challenge, every student was offered an invitation to another, much bigger HOBY event called the World Leadership Congress (WLC).

The WLC will be held in Chicago from July 19 to 26 this Summer. Roughly 400 students from inside and outside the U.S. will meet to learn about being a leader and discuss current issues, as well as complete various service projects in the city. World-class speakers and leaders will join us to provide an amazing experience. I truly feel that I will be much better able to maximize my potential as a leader and achieve my goal of reviving the Key Club next year if I have the tools and motivation that HOBY has to offer. Unfortuately, while the costs of the SoCal confrence were graciously covered by my local Kiwanis Club through the school, this event must be paid through personal efforts. So, I am conducting multiple fundraisers and requests to meet my financial goal.

To be able to participate in this trip, I need to raise $1,675 to attend and roughly $500-700 for a plane ticket, plus website fees. It's a large sum, but I would love more than anything to be able to accept this invitation and take my leadership to the next level. As I said, I will also be fundraising from other sources, so I will add all donations from outside this site to the total amount.

You can find more information about this event at http://www.hoby.org/world-leadership-congress. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to read this, and I assure you that any donation has my deepest appreciation.

Thank you again,
Elliott Ettore
