I never imagined I'd be having to do this (and I'm still not comfortable with doing this), but close friends have persuaded me that I really need a custom-built wheelchair to suit my requirements.
After years of using wheelchairs that are not fit for purpose, needing continual repair works, and have often caused me to be in a lot of pain (on occasions involving hospital stays and broken bones). This has made it difficult to maintain a level of independence and comfort, so I need to look into a custom-built wheelchair that will help me to get about pain-free.
This will be a chair designed from scratch, especially for me, rather than a standard chair that has been modified to try and be as suitable as it can be.
As those who know me are aware, going to watch football, as well travelling with work, form a massive part of my life. A lightweight wheelchair with power-assisted wheels will help enable me to continue to do these things without being in discomfort and pain.
It isn't possible to get a custom made wheelchair via the NHS. I would be eligible for a small amount of funding from the NHS, but with the time it would take to receive this and then the time spent building the chair, it would be at least seven months before I could feel comfortable and confident in a suitable, custom-built wheelchair. I really don’t know if I can wait that long.
I am looking to raise approximately £10,000, which would cover the cost of the wheelchair which will cost around £4,250 (possibly more depending on the number of adaptions needed) and the power assisted wheels, which are approximately £5,500
Any additional funding that I am fortunate enough to raise will be donated to the Brittle Bone Society, the national charity for people with Osteogenesis Imperfecta - https://brittlebone.org/. For those of you who do not know, Osteogenesis Imperfecta is the genetic condition that I have.
