Amelia Strong

On the morning of January 24, 2019, Amelia suffered a massive Ischemic stroke. She was not discovered at her apartment for 16 hours, so she was not a candidate for Clot buster medications and had to be transferred by helicopter to Memorial Herman Hospital in downtown Houston, Tx. After seven days she was transferred back to Victoria, TX where she entered Post-Acute Medical Service (PAMS) Rehabilitation Facility. It was there Amelia began intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy. After a month stay at PAMS Amelia was able to return to her home and is currently receiving outpatient rehabilitation three times a week at PAMS Warm Springs.

Amelia Lechuga has been a pillar to the Victoria community through her efforts to assist those in need. Her early career was as the Executive Director of Spirit of Youth, a program geared toward low income children who had been or were identified as high risk of being abused.  This program offered enrichment activities for students in school such as tutoring, sewing, cooking, camping, and ballet. Amelia also coordinated a clothing and school supply ministry in conjunction with the enrichment activities.

Through her work with these students and their families it was determined that the root of many abuse cases was due to food insecurity in the home. Through her efforts she was able to add a food pantry to the community’s rapidly growing list of needs. The food pantry grew into what is now known as the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent which currently serves over 100 food pantries in the eleven surrounding counties.

Amelia has dedicated herself to a career of helping those in need. Although Amelia is not accustomed to being on the receiving end of a caring deed, she needs our help. Amelia has partial temporary paralysis in her left arm and her left leg is very weak. The stroke has affected her speech and communication and currently requires 24-hour care and assistance with all daily activities. Due to the stroke Amelia is not currently able to work.

Please consider donating to help defray medical expenses and other costs associated to help Amelia continue to work her way back to health.

Thank you so much for your support!!!
