Am who lived in Dallas for over 3 decades recently moved to California in 2016 to live her life with old family and friends in which she has not seen in ages. But after coming back to Dallas in February 2017 to visit her only two kids and grandkids, she was under going some chest and shoulder pain which prevented her from returning back to California as she anticipated.
March 2017, Am was diagnosed with thymic carcinoma cancer “Thymoma and thymic carcinoma are diseases in which malignant (cancer) cells form on the outside surface of the thymus. The thymus, a small organ that lies in the upper chest under the breastbone, is part of the lymph system. It makes white blood cells, called lymphocytes, that protect the body against infections” and was told that her cancer was rare and not resectable and only has a year to a year and a half to live unless there’s a miracle.
Some of the issues addressed were pain management, and shrinkage of the tumor. Since her first round of chemotherapy and radiation she was told that the cancer has spread to her pelvic bone and is now having a hard time walking on her own without the help of her grandkids and her walker.
On 14th of November, she started radiation to new spots, followed by a different (and according to her oncologist) much more aggressive chemotherapy protocol as the efficacy of the first drug has run its course. She's being brave in the face of this, as usual but I know she's dispirited by what lies ahead as she continues to loose her hair and is now bald.
She continues to need assistance in walking more than a few steps, and has a standing endurance of only several minutes. So the simple pleasures and joys, such as cooking and caring for her 9 grandkids are not simple anymore - mostly they are painful so she's limited in doing the things she loves most and cares about in life.
Champa is her sole caregiver: taking care of her family, getting her to and from appointments and daily treatments, researching and advocating for any benefits and resources that could be available to someone with thymic carcinoma cancer, working full time when she can, so there continues to be ongoing financial issues and needs for medical costs and hospital bills.
