My name is Cynthia Coomes. Alexis Seay is a young woman who has filed suit against the University of Evansville (my alma mater) for sexual and racial harassment.
Alexis's complaint alleges that a male professor targeted her on numerous episodes and subjected her to racial and sexual harassment and unwanted touching. The allegations include sexual comments about her body and race in a classroom of her peers, touching and making comments about her hair in class, sharing his own sexual preferences with Alexis and other students and grabbing her hair and refusing to let it go in class.
Alexis made multiple complaints to the Title IX office (the director of which is also named in the suit). The suit alleges her complaints were either ignored or she was given false information about action steps and resolution.
Alexis was forced to leave the University of Evansville with very little notice after allegedly receiving a late night email from the professor named in the suit requesting a private meeting with her. She feared for her safety so badly that she left the university in the middle of the semester.
Like most young people, Alexis started college as an excited and eager young woman, 18 years old and living away from home. She now requires specialized mental health treatment and has had her education and future derailed.
I admire Alexis's bravery in speaking out. I admire her ability to stand up and say "no more" through her trauma and pain.
The change in the trajectory of her life due to the circumstances outlined in the complaint (linked below) are causing her to incur debts she otherwise would have avoided.
If anyone you care about has ever been victimized by a professor, teacher, administrator or any other person in a position of power, please give. Young people know their futures are in the hands of the faculty and staff of colleges and universities and many young men and women have endured what Alexis has endured.
We have funded over half a year of specialized treatment for Alexis.
