SAN JOSE -- As a struggling single mother, Falelima Puaauli embraced her children with unconditional love amid sometimes dire conditions while impressing upon them the importance of generosity, community and family.
Her values seeped in. When metastatic cancer claimed her life at age 46 two years ago, her then-teenage son and his girlfriend stepped up to care for his younger siblings and fulfill Puaauli's wish the family stay together. Facing hardships that often overwhelm many young people, the pair has persevered -- though now housing costs driven skyward by the tech boom have added another challenge.
We can't relieve the pain and the sorrow in children who have lost their mother. Nothing can make that better. What we can do is try to help this family regain the independence that they had carved out with their hard work and the steadfast belief that family must come first.
With Jack and Hannah, it is an investment that will empower the lives of six people: a family growing together, children thriving and joyful despite life's tragedies, and two young adults whom we should be proud to know.

The housing market took that away from them, and that's not right.
We can't fix the housing market this way, BUT, Jack and Hannah may be more attractive applicants to landlords if they can provide first and last month's rent and an additional security deposit. It's a sign of terrible times in the Silicon Valley when working families must strategize to put a roof over their heads, but that is our truth.
