All-School Read-Madison Memorial HS

As many of you're aware, in the middle of 2017, Forte partnered with James Madison Memorial High School to help with various projects, fundraising initiatives, guest speaking, etc.  In late 2017, we implemented the 9OT Tutoring Program at Memorial High School where Forte team members could use their VTO to help 9th grade students stay on track by offering tutoring services in the classroom.

As we move forward into 2018, Forte would like your help in supporting James Madison Memorial’s All School Read Program.  Memorial’s goal is to provide a copy of the book, Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from a Minneapolis High School, to all 2,200 students and staff in the school and provide programming to engage the school community on an issue that affects us all. Memorial is currently entering their fundraising stage and in total, are hoping to raise $26,000 to make their vision a reality.  This amount includes books for both students and staff, honoraria and travel expenses for speakers and exhibit rental.  Forte’s goal is to raise $12,000 for the All School Read Program.

This is an “opt-in” program meaning Memorial is not requiring students to read the book and there will be no grades or assignments attached to the project.  Students and staff are invited to read this book over a month (last week of March – end of April), and as they read, discuss the book with teachers, peers and individuals from the greater community. A group of 35 students from Memorial have met and planned various activities for students and staff to attend as they begin reading.  Activities include: book discussions before and after school, watching a documentary about immigration, bringing in guest speakers; including 3 students who wrote a story in the book and a community potluck for everyone to come together at the end. Teachers are also having planning sessions to incorporate discussions and lessons across the content areas, and plan programs to not only aid students in their reading, but also to discuss the issues that arise within the book.

Forte team members will receive a copy of this book the last week of March 2018 and are encouraged to read this book as well as help support Memorial make their vision of the All School Read Program a reality by contributing on this GoFundMe Campaign.  Forte will match team members contributions 1:1.  No reimbursement paperwork will need to be submitted to Human Resources.

As a reminder, team members have $1,500 in matching contributions that can be used each year.  The campaign will close Friday, March 2, 2018.
