Aliyah's Pre- College Course

Hi. I'm Aliyah.  I live in Los Angeles and am in 11th grade.  I am very passionate about pursuing film, writing and cinematography beyond high school and once I am in college.  I have one more year before graduating, and am doing all I can in school, to develop my knowledge and skills in these areas of interest. 

I would greatly love to be able to participate in a summer 'pre-college' program, at a college about 8 hours North of my home, offering a unique 3-week course for high school juniors and seniors.  The program involves students staying on campus in dorm housing for the 3-week period while taking the courses. The curriculum offers classes in film, writing and cinematography, my precise focus!  These have become my biggest outlets for self expression, as well as my greatest passion.  

I live in a single parent home with my brother and mother, and we are of very modest income.   I am often inhibited by my family’s finances, in taking advantage of various resources which others can access.  I have made the most of what I could at school however, including debuting various art shows, short film screenings, and I am always producing, directing and editing short films.  I envision myself one day maturing into the role of being able to make people laugh, feel, think, cry, and wonder, with the work I produce.

The program I'd love to participate in is financially out of my family's range.  I received a need-based scholarship award towards the cost, which I am very grateful for, yet the tuition balance still remains too great for us to pay. 

I was hoping that the scholarship award, would have been more substantial - enabling us to pay the balance on our end.  We are still $1000 shy of the mark.  The college must have all applicant admission deposits by April 1st, which is just around the corner.  As such, I am trying desperately to raise further funds to complete my tuition costs, prior to April 1st.

While most of my friends might be traveling with their families or friends this summer, on leisure trips and vacations, my goal is to attend the 3-week pre-college program so that I may further the knowledge in the areas which I intend to further pursue.   I try very hard to always "carry my own water", as my mother has taught me - to work hard and be responsible for my efforts, and then benefit from those accomplishments.  This time, I recognize that I am limited by what I cannot afford, and not my potential nor talent, and that is why I am reaching out for assistance.  I would be incredibly appreciative for any contributions towards my goal.  This pre-college program experience means the world to me, and I would like to one day pay it forward and do the same for others who find themselves in the position I am in now.
