Alexa fights cancer

Donation protected
Wow! We did it! Alexa was able to order her Penguin Cold Cap therapy and it will arrive in time for her first chemo infusion this Thursday! Any extra money raised will go towards medical expenses, and any leftover will be donated to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester.  So, keep donating and keep sharing! Let’s help as much as we can!

Friday, July 13th, my best friend was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer... Everything happened so quickly and within a few short weeks, she was in the hospital bravely facing an 11 hour surgery. About 24 hours after her surgery, we were finally able to talk...... In a weak voice she told me “the doctors said it went well and are really optimistic.” Who could have known how wrong that statement was.

She spent six days in the hospital with uncontrolled pain and required a blood transfusion. 48 hours after being discharged home, she was back in the hospital, this time in critical condition with uncontrolled fevers and an unknown infection.  Her medical team never did figure out the source of the infection, but she was on caustic antibiotics for weeks.

The recovery following was slow. Incisions started to heal and we finally thought full recovery was in sight. Again, how wrong we were. On September 13th, she texted me “I need chemo and radiation.” My heart hurt so much, I couldn’t fathom how much hers did.

The process of chemo on anyone is devastating to both the body and soul. However, for a woman, the process of losing your breasts and then losing your hair is heartbreaking. To have already endured so much and have such a simple thing like your hair taken away, it seems almost unforgivable. As we endure what I can only pray will be the last step, I would love nothing more than to let my best friend keep her beautiful, long, blonde hair. Vain? Maybe. Necessary? Probably not. Deserved? More than anyone I know.

However, there is a (very expensive) cap you can wear through the process of having chemotherapy, that stops the loss of hair.  She is unwilling to buy it for herself because she doesn’t yet know her uncovered medical expenses for the past two months, or the future treatments and surgeries we already know she’ll need.

I would love nothing more than for this beautiful soul to keep her beautiful hair after this devastating few months...
Please donate to the cost of Penguin Cold Cap Therapy and let her keep this small part of herself.
