My name is Tevin Boyd and I’m currently a sophomore attending Coahoma Community College majoring in Journalism. Over the past year, I’ve worked with the Mississippi Youth Council advocating for comprehensive sex education in all MS public schools which today does not require information to be medically accurate, evidence-based. I’m looking to raise money to enhance my knowledge in grassroots organizing, social and economic issues, while also paving a future in public policy in journalism by attending the ACLU Advanced Advocacy Program in Washington D.C.
Growing up in the Mississippi Delta we see first hand an unequal system at play that every child, including myself, have/had to experience. That inequality takes root in our educational system, in areas around health care, and even our justice system through the underfunding of our schools, increasing teenage pregnancy rates, and even the lack of positive male representation in our communities. I wish to convert my insights and passions into actionable change through the ACLU Advanced Academy while bringing those skills back to my community to improve the greater Clarksdale area and the Mississippi Delta while also utilizing the ACLU’s national platform to shed light on issues and the lived experiences of people residing in our community.
