My Story

My name is Eamon Murphy, I am a 16 year old high school sophomore from Anchorage, Alaska. I have always loved the ocean ever since I was a little kid. The oceans are a big part of my lifestyle and I believe that we must do all that we can to protect them. I appreciate living in Alaska and observing the rich marine ecosystem that we have here. I want to protect those ecosystems so people can continue to come to Alaska and be awed not only by the beauty of the mountains in the interior, but by the porpoises, whales, seals, otters, and other marine life that is abundant in our waters.

The University of Alaska Southeast Dive Semester is a semester long program that allows students to get certified in all of the necessary areas to become a research diver. I would be learning about open water diving and small vessel maintenance, as well as cold water rescue and navigation on the water. These skills will lead to an independent research project on a marine topic of my choice. The goal of the program is to teach students about research diving and give them a strong base to expand upon individually.

I have always been interested in marine biology and marine ecosystems. I am hoping to study at a university that has a strong program in these fields. I have been doing as much work as possible to get a step ahead and make myself stand out when it comes time to apply to  college. As a high school student, taking this college level course is the next step for me to show universities that I am curious about the world around me and motivated to learn more than just what is in a textbook .

The course will be a semester long and it will take place in Sitka, Alaska. I am already accepted into the program and I am all set to go, however I have to raise all of the money for the program on my own. I am in the process of getting a job, and I am currently doing some graphic design work on the side. I am going to need to pay for my tuition and fees, my housing, and meals. In total the cost will be about $10,000 and the fees must be payed by the 29th of January.

I greatly appreciate your support in furthering my education and helping me to follow my dream of protecting the ocean and learning more about its wonders. I want to make sure that people can continue to enjoy the healthy marine ecosystem that Alaska holds dear.
