OU-HCOM Summer Abroad: Ecuador

The Bustillo Medical School Fund

Hey everyone!
If you do not already know me, my name is Mark Brandon Bustillo. I am a Bowling Green State University graduate from Oakwood, Ohio and just began my medical career finishing my first year of medical school at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. As a future physician medical school is an exciting time for me and I plan on taking full advantage of the opportunities offered. Being a good medical student means more than receiving A's on all of my exams, although God knows I will try. It means connecting what you learn in the classroom to the people you want to help in the real world. This is what The Bustillo Medical School Fund is all about. We are asking for contributions so that I may pursue extra curricular activities that contribute towards needy communities while furthering my education and preparing me for a future of caring and healing. These contributions will go towards fees that include, but are not limited to; travel, food, tickets, equipment, educational resources, and much more. We are NOT asking you to contribute towards my tuition. Ohio University's medical education adds up to $177,063 in ONLY tuition and fees at the end of my four years. Typically this indebtness is increased between $200,000-$300,000 after living expenses have been added. My tuition is a burden I am happy to take on by myself. A medical school education is a privilege few are lucky enough to pursue and the cost is something I am happy to work off. However, help with additional expenses is well needed and my first philanthropic endeavor takes me to Ecuador...

OU-Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Summer Abroad in Ecuador 2015

Ohio University takes pride in the summer abroad programs it offers its students. Doctors Without Borders is an aspiration I have for my future career as a physician and this program is a perfect step towards providing global care. As you will see in the video provided, the trip to Ecuador is very comprehensive as it provides students with tropical disease research, epidemiology, public health, clinical, and community building opportunities to increase the well being and quality of life of the communities in Ecuador. I would like to focus my time doing research at the “Center for Infectious Disease Research in Ecuador” based in Quito, Ecuador, which is cooperated by the Catholic University of Ecuador and Ohio University. This program is broken down into multiple components that focus on different tasks. For the first two weeks of this program I will be in Cariamanga assisting Dr. Casapulla with research regarding body mass index and the general health of a pediatric population in this mountainous region of Ecuador. While we are working with these children another group will be collecting samples in the field regarding the tropical disease "chagas." The last two weeks of the program we will be in Quito, Ecuador working in a lab analyzing the samples collected in the field regarding chagas.

The program components I am involved in will run from June 13th to July 13th, which is my departure and return flights.

The cost of the Ecuador Abroad Experience is approximately $7,000. Let me walk you through the costs:

Tuition (I recieve school credit)- $3,600
Abroad Education Deposit Fee- $500
Round Trip Flight- $1,100
Emergency Fund- $1,000
Supplies for trip- $300
Supplies while there- $300
Transportation- $200
Spending money- $500 (not included on this page)

Any donations received will go towards these payments (not including my spending money).

I will update this information as more details emerge. If you would like to contact me feel free to do so as GoFundMe provides a way for you to contact me. We may also arrange a time to speak in person or on the phone if you would like.

If for any reason I am unable to attend this trip the money obtained here will be donated to the Tropical Disease Research Program in Ecuador.

I would like to thank all of my family, friends, co-workers, peers and supporters for helping me make it this far. I could not have made it this far without you. Thank you all for your interest and I look forward to hearing from you.
