My cousin came to America to help her pregnant daughter-in-law have their first child. Within 10 days of being here, she had to be taken to the emergency room, where she had an emergency surgery the next day for kidney stones. The hospital kept her for 18 days because they found a bacterium that caused an infection in her kidneys that could have killed her within 48 hours. She spent Christmas practically in isolation due to this. She was released from the hospital before New Year's Eve under the care of a nurse in her house who was administering antibiotics trying to kill the bacteria. She was only in her home for about a week before feeling immense pain again and had to be taken to the ER for the second time and for a second surgery. She had to spend five days in the hospital this time because of the same kidney infection, only this second surgery took out the kidney stones that were causing the infection that nearly cost her life.

Keep in mind that my cousin is from South America, and some of you might know the situation that is going on over there. The country is under a dictatorship with a bloodthirsty leader who has left the country in turmoil. She came to the U.S. from a country where there is no food, the people are dying of starvation and there is no medicine. My cousin arrived here with barely any money, and only came to support her family. Now she is drowning in hospital debt that she can’t pay. The hospital is telling her that she must pay $110,000 for her treatment. She has explained that she has no money, and no insurance; to get that much money from her country is impossible because the inflation in that country is more than 2,600%. Not only that but the government is the only one that has access to the foreign exchange. The hospital administration is now threatening her and telling her that if she does not pay the debt and leaves, she will not be able to enter the country again.
