Aiyela’s Medical Expenses

Aiyèla is the happiest little 1 year old girl ever and you would never suspect that anything was going on with her. She has had a hard first year of life. Everything escalated quickly and we felt like we were drowning. So let me start from the beginning.
At 3 months we took Aiyèla to a standard check up at her pediatrician’s office on Friday. Her stomach area felt harder than usual and was extended out further than normal. Early Saturday morning she was admitted into KEMH. Sunday she received an ultrasound along with numerous blood test and on Monday we received the scariest news ever. They told us that she had tumors in her body that were growing excessively and if not treated immediately, could be life threatening. They were causing her blood pressure to fluctuate, her THS levels to sky rocket, her appetite to decrease, she also became anemic, very pale and lethargic. Bermuda’s hospital had no idea exactly what it was, if they were cancerous and why they were causing so much issues inside her little body. Tuesday morning we were flown out to Toronto Sick Kids hospital where we ended up spending an unexpected 6 months. There she had been diagnosed with Hemangioma which was found on her liver, lungs and skin. Even though it is apparently common in premature babies hers was clarified as a rare case due to finding it in all 3 places.
Being out there for so long, we as parents, wasn’t able to cover the cost of various things without having a steady income from a job. We managed to pay for what we can along with the help from the support system we had but they were only able to do so much. Along with the remaining bills left at The Ronald Mcdonald House and Toronto Sick Kids we are due to return back in May for 3-4 weeks (hopefully no longer than that) for more scans, blood work and an updated progress report, which means more mounting medical expenses.
As we know asking for help can be difficult. It can chip away at our pride, make us feel weak and make us question our own abilities. However, as her parents it was the best decision ever to go forth with sending her Toronto Sick Kids no matter what the outcome would have been. We are asking for help to alleviate the remaining medical expenses and the additional expenses to come while out there in May. Anything helps no matter how much and we are more than grateful for the help that we do receive.
