On Monday, November 13, Aimee Shemwell and her family were involved in a tragic auto accident in Front Royal, Virginia.
Her husband Spencer and their four children survived. Aimee, who was pregnant, died at the scene. The baby could not be saved.
Aimee was just 29. Obviously, family and friends are devastated.
Spencer has been released from the hospital and along with his three older children is being cared for by Aimee’s parents. Baby Bexley remains in the PICU but is expected to recover.
I’ve known this beautiful family for several years. They are members of our church and Spencer and Bexley were models in the book I wrote with my wife — A Letter to Mary.
Spencer played Joseph and Bexley, just a few days old at the time, played the infant Jesus. Working with the Shemwells was among the highlights of my career. Everyone involved in the book grew to love the family very much.
The road ahead for Spencer and his family will be long and challenging. While visiting him in the hospital, I offered to take responsibility to gathering funds for their family. He was overcome with relief and wishes to thank everyone in advance for their generosity.
My wife and I are rededicating the book to Aimee and donating 100% of the proceeds to the Shemwells. I promised him that finances would be the least of their concerns as they adjust to their new reality.
