AlvinAiley Professional Summer Intensive

Hello, my name is Dae'Vencia Chavis and I am an 11th grade student at Suitland High School. I am a student in the Visual and Performing Arts program there, and my current Grade Point Average (G.P.A) is a 3.7. My dream has always been to be a performer, and when I was in 7th grade, I found my passion; dance. I adore dancing. It is something that I will always see myself involved in or doing. I love the art of dance. It is beautiful. I love how I am able to tell a story through my movements. I also love how I am able to allow my passion for dance to shine through and change the lives of others. Dance is not just a hobby for me; it is a lifestyle. I cannot go a day without it. I dance through the hallways of my school and people always say "Dae, stop dancing; there's no music playing girl!" That never stopped me. I dance because it makes me feel good. I can lose myself when I dance. It is something no one can ever take away from me. I am dance. About two years ago, I fell in love with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. I know that if I ever had the honor to dance or perform with their company that I would not be discriminated against because of my race, gender, or physique. I love the Horton based dance technique that they use, their quality and strength, as well as the execution of their movement. Alvin Ailey is my dream company, so I was elated when they told me that I was accepted into their 6-week professional summer intensive program. The program runs from June 23, 2014-August 1, 2014. I will be assigned 12-15 classes/workshops per week including a daily ballet class and a daily class of Horton and/or Graham"“based modern. Additional elective classes include jazz, Dunham technique, hip-hop, tap, body conditioning, yoga, Gyrokinesis®, barre à terre and/or a repertory or elective workshop. The training that I will receive will enhance my technique, and literally be a dream come true! This financial burden is too much for my mom, a single parent to my sister and me, so I am soliciting your help for a financial donation. Please help me to make my dream come true!
