Hardworking – tending to work with energy and commitment

Bad ass – a general term used to describe behavior that is fearless, authentic, compassionate, and ethical

Trustworthy – able to be relied on as honest or truthful

Chingón - Someone who is very smart, intelligent and can do things quickly.

Stubborn – having determination not to change one’s attitude or position on something, especially in spite of good arguments or reasons to do so

These are just a few words that describe who Abel Martinez is. He is the father you admire, the husband that cherishes you, the brother you trust in, and the son that you’d fight the world for. Abel has always been the dependable guy working 12-hour days to provide for his family. He started as a boy working the onion fields and mastered his profession as a refrigeration technician to always shelter, clothe, and love his family.

On Thursday September 14th, 2017 he went into the hospital thinking he had a pinched nerve in his leg, but was diagnosed with Stage IV Liver Cancer. He had just started a new job which meant he had no health insurance. His world changed. The cancer had already spread from his liver to his ribs, lungs, spine, and attached itself to his thigh bone to the point of a bone break. Within days he received surgery to install a rod to prevent that breakage from occurring. Since then everyday has been a battle and he was given a prognosis of 3 to 6 months. He was immediately classified as disabled with no ability to work or provide for his family. His wife Elsa had to leave her employment to provide him 24/7 care.

The law states that an individual may not be able to collect their social security benefits until five months from the last date of employment. Abel would not be able to receive those benefits until March 2018. There is very minimal income coming into the household to cover their mortgage, insurances, transportation, and now piling medical bills.

During these hard times we turn to you and ask for prayers and help. We ask in the spirit of love, sharing, and kindness to open your hearts to help Abel, his wife Elsa, and his 16-year-old son Freddy. With your help we can alleviate some of these financial burdens that are hovering over the Martinez family. Anything will help, and we thank you in advance for you all your prayers, love, and support.
