Aid for TCI Potcake Dogs After Irma

Tax deductible
In the wake of Hurricane Irma, Turks & Caicos animal welfare needs us now more than ever. On September 7, 2017, Hurricane Irma ripped through the small chain of islands that make up the Turks and Caicos, packing catastrophic winds of 170mph. During the storm the brave staff family of Pampered Paws, a local animal sanctuary, protected the lives of over 100 animals, 86 dogs (affectionately known by locals as Potcakes), 19 cats, 2 birds and 2 rabbits and goats.

Humans and animals huddled together in a single room as the shattering winds tore off large sections of the dwelling roof and devastated the outdoor dog pens and shelters. ALL ANIMALS and Humans made it through but the home and sanctuary was completely destroyed. Dogs rescued by the local TCSPCA depend wholly on the Pampered Paws sanctuary as a foster home. The future of that sanctuary is now in question and this is where we need your help.

SAVEDOG Project pledges that 100% of the funds raised through this campaign will go directly to Turks & Caicos animal welfare organizations including TCSPCA, Pampered Paws, Potcake Project and Potcake Place - Your contribution will directly help the Potcake dogs of TCI to get the care that they so desperately need.

SAVEDOG Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue organization based in Wilmington, North Carolina, dedicated to the safe and sound relocation of  unwanted, abandoned and neglected dogs from NC, SC and VA to places where they will enter into adoption. Through our sister non-profit rescue, Potcake Project, we serve the same mission in Turks & Caicos Islands.

Why Turks & Caicos? Our founder, John Thomas has a home base both in NC and Providenciales, Turks and Caicos and is committed to saving dogs from these areas. Between he, his fiancé and his daughter, they personally own 7 Potcakes rescued from the streets and bush of Providenciales.

What is a Potcake?

Potcakes are virtually everywhere in the Turks & Caicos and Islands and Bahamas. On these idyllic islands, thousands (correction, many thousands) of stray Potcakes wander the streets, docks, construction sites, beaches and brush in constant search for food, fresh water, shelter and occasional acts of kindness by humans. Despite continued spay & neuter efforts, the numbers of feral, stray dogs continue to grow. Most locals and vacationers who encounter these amazing island dogs view them with empathy and compassion. There are a handful of dedicated non-profit “potcake rescue” organizations that work tirelessly to rescue homeless potcakes, nurse them to back to health and place them up for adoption. Unfortunately, too many other people apathetically perceive the homeless island dogs as a mere nuisance. Even worse, others inexplicably (ignorantly) treat them inhumanely with disdain and contemp. Bottom line, a homeless Potcake’s life is a grueling grind – a day-to-day struggle for survival. Left to survive in the wild, they experience dramatically shortened lives, followed by cruel, painful, lonely deaths.

Although their appearance can vary greatly, traditional potcake dogs generally have smooth coats, cocked “helicopter” style ears, long hound-like faces and expressive eyes. They are a medium size dog, typically growing to between 35 to 55 pounds, with the average being around 45 pounds. Most Potcakes wear their emotions in their eyes (and, of course, their tails). No hidden agendas, what you see are what you get. Once you gain their trust, they are incredibly loyal, loving and very intelligent. When a Potcake is rescued, given care, attention and affection, they almost always express enthusiastic and sincere appreciation for their good fortune. Wonderful as family house pets, you would be very lucky to have a Potcake choose you for their human
