The whole story:

The community we want to aid lives in a settlement on a private property a few kilometers above Ibagué (Department Tolima, Colombia). Despite its proximity to the city, the property is very remote and is therefore often pushed out of the awareness of the regional government. We became aware of the emergency situation in the settlement during a walk and the red flags on its fences (in Colombia they signal the lack of food during the COVID-19 pandemic) and we asked the inhabitants about their current situation. Maira, a woman living in the villiage, answered us warmly and willingly during a tour through the settlement:

There are currently over 300 families (approx. 1100 individuals) living in the settlement. Among them are more than 200 children at the age of 5-15 years, old people, cancer patients and pregnant women. The dwellings are mainly made of wood and tarps and are built by the people themselves. The water supply is also self-supplied from a nearby river. The settlement is not officially recognized, which is why it is denied public water supply. A large part of the inhabitants is normally working in the informal sector and thus earn their income by selling fruits and vegetables in the street.

However, due to the restrictive and ongoing measures imposed by the Colombian government in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, this is currently not possible. The settlement is therefore dependent on external support. The announced government aid is often embezzled and hardly reaches the needy. For this reason, in addition to the already precarious living conditions of the residents, there is also a lack of food and the currently so important hygiene articles such as disinfectants.

We want to help.
Together with you.
As soon as possible.

For this reason we have started the fundraising campaign, because we believe in the strength of the crowd. We ask you to help out with a monetary donation. The residents are extremely grateful for every cent that reaches them!

With the money you provide, we want to buy food and hygiene products and provide them to the community. The village is very well organized. There is a settlement board and lists of all residents. Therefore we are sure that the donations will be divided fairly.

We will be happy to answer any further questions about the settlement, the current situation in Colombia and about us personally. Reach us either via PM or e-mail: [email redacted] or [email redacted]

Thank you very much and stay healthy!
