My name is Nirva Cineas Auguste; I'm Ronald Cineas' oldest sister. The family is putting this fund together on behalf of our brother, Ronald Cineas. I'm requesting help from all friends, coworkers, and family to help fund legal expenses.
Anyone that knows Ron, knows that is he a generous, God-fearing and loving, charismatic, educated, athletic, compassionate, humble, young man. He is a single father to Natalie K. Cineas and has done everything to support her emotionally and financially from the moment he found out he was going to be a father. Ron is a hard worker. He has been working 2, some times 3, jobs simultaneously, for the past 7 years to provide for Natalie all while in school.
On December 6, 2012 our brother was involved in a car accident on his way home. He'd just finished working a nearly 15 hour shift. The accident took place shortly after midnight, in Brandon, FL. Ron was nearly home, and was actually getting into the turning lane to turn into his apartment complex, when he heard a loud thud. It was a foggy night, and it was raining lightly. He braked and looked around, but due to the poor visibility Ron did not see what caused the sound. He turned into his complex and parked his truck, went up to his apartment to grab his bike and went back to investigate the area. While en-route to the area, he was stopped by an officer, and eventually came to know that the sound was actually skateboarder, Jonathan Redding as he hit his truck.
Losing a loved one is a very sad and tragic experience. My heart goes out to Jonathan Redding’s family. This experience has forever changed all of our lives. I pray they find comfort and peace.
Jonathan did not pass away at the scene of the accident. He was badly injured, and ultimately, the family decided to take him off of life support.
Ron was charged with and found guilty of leaving the scene of an accident with death. He has been sentenced to 12 years.
Our family has always been a close-knit Caribbean family. Words cannot express the deep sorrow my Mother and Father, along with our entire family are enduring at this time as to not having Ron with us. My heart hurts the most for my niece, Natalie. We haven’t had the heart to tell her what is going on. She thinks her father is on a mission trip in Haiti and doesn’t have access to a phone to call or Skype her. My heart breaks a little more every time she asks, “When is daddy coming home?”
We respect that a life was lost in this tragic event. We’re not trying to escape justice. We’re just trying to make sure Ron has a fair chance. This was an unfortunate situation. It was after midnight, foggy, and misty. The skateboarder was not wearing reflectors as mandated by the Florida statute. Ron was driving an old truck, with headlights that just met the requirements. The area was not well lit; it’s a tree-line area, and in fact several other drivers passed by and didn’t even see anything.
Thankfully, the appellate court believes that there was enough discrepancy with the first trial, and is allowing us the chance to appeal the case. The process is lengthy, and as you can probably imagine, expensive. As I mentioned before, we’re a Caribbean family. My parents moved us here from Haiti when Ron and I were small children. They have worked hard all of our lives to provide for us. It hasn’t been easy due to language and education barriers, but they made sure the 5 of us always had our needs met and plenty of love.
They have instilled in us a since of responsibility and thought us the importance of an education. Ron moved to Tampa in August 2001 to attend USF. Ron has an out-going personality and can be-friend anyone, no matter their difference in backgrounds.
Ron has been a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., since fall 2002.
Ron is a great friend to all, and is a vital part of our family. We will do anything necessary to help our brother in this situation. This tragedy has brought us even closer as a family. It’s been humbling and awe-inspiring to find out how much we really love one another. We’re all hard-working, and will work diligently to get through the appeal process.
