Medical Bills, Family Hardship

It has been 13 years since the conflict in Afghanistan began. Sadly, this is just one of many conflicts over the modern history of my home country. In the end the lack of infrastructure due to civil unrest continues to paralyze my home country and render living conditions worse than anyone could ever imagine in America.

By comparison to global natural disaster relief efforts, the amount of donations addressing the various humanitarian crises in the Middle East is terribly small and largely ineffective.

Now as the world turns its attention to Iraq and the continuing crisis in Syria (for whom I sympathize for the civilians there) I am deeply concerned about the continuing crisis in Afghanistan as it has touched home.

Three weeks ago a roadside bomb destroyed the vehicle that my great-uncle (67), 5 high school students (ages 12-15)-one who’s eye was so severely damaged he had to have it removed in Pakistan because Afghanistan lacks the technical expertise to carry out such a procedure- and my cousin Tahir (30), and 2 other elders were traveling in.

My uncle who was in the front seat was tragically killed during this attack. My cousin Tahir, however, has survived -- losing one of his legs.

Tahir will only walk again with aid that is not available in Afghanistan and will probably never gain employment in a country with no infrastructure and limited social services. But the story does not end with Tahir – as my cousin has 6 young children.

In a country where women do not have the opportunity to work, Tahir is the only adult in his family who could conceivably support these children in providing them the basic necessities to have grow up normally in a land where death, murder, and chaos are far too often the norm.

We are in desperate need of financial assistance for his medical procedures which can only be performed abroad. In addition, we need assistance for his family's living expenses necessary for the families survival over the next few years.

Please provide my cousin Tahir, his wife, and his children a future by donating today, as the alternative presents a very dim and bleak outcome.

Thank you in advance for generosity.

I was inspired three years ago to participate in an organizing fellowship called TOLA where I worked on a campaign to raise money for a school district, coordinated a town hall with over one hundred non-profits dedicated to solving the youth violence epidemic as well as developed a comprehensive resource guide of area agencies to be distributed to educate the area’s youth of the resources they have at their disposal. The most important thing I learned was organizing to make a change in the lives of others and today I'm asking for your help.
