Agua Mala: Bad Water
Donation protected
Agua mala. Bad water.
That’s how the people in the town of La Descubierta in the Dominican Republic describe any water that’s not prepackaged. They travel for hours every day just to get it and still they have to filter it to make it safe.
Cal Poly Journalism senior Erik Engle has seen this distress first hand over more than a decade of visits.
This March, he’s hoping to lead a group of Cal Poly journalism students back to La Descubierta to create a short documentary that tells the story of one family’s daily struggle to get safe water.
This project will explore whether and how one professor’s partial solution to the problem—vests designed to make the carrying of water a bit easier—changes things for this family. The story will be told through video, print and photographs.
It’s an important story to tell, but we need your help.
The total project will cost about $7,000. Please help Erik, Mikaela Duhs and Shanti Herzog tell this story. Your financial donation can help these students shine a spotlight on one of the world’s most truly life-or-death issues.
