AGH Employee Reunion 2018

In 2009 the community hospital known as Alachua General Hospital in Gainesville, Florida was closed and eventually torn down. At the time of closing, the employees said their goodbyes and transferred to other facilities to work. Many of the employees had worked together for 10, 20, 30 years and some even longer. This was a close group of employees who considered each other as family.

This past October I created a group Facebook page to find out if my former coworkers were interested in a reunion. To my amazement, over 1,200+ people respond with an enthusiastic "Yes." The comments people left on the FB page made me realize what a special place AGH, as it is affectionately known as, was to work. Numerous comments written by former employees were stated by several people, "it was the best place I have ever worked" or "AGH was family" or "I miss that place so much."
It was settled. We had to have a reunion. A planning committee was formed by 12 eager employees. Gainesville is a small community and there are not a lot of venues that can hold 1,200+ people. The University of Florida campus was the most likely choice. The basketball arena called the O'Connell Center was available but the cost will be between $14,000 and $19,000 for 1,200 people. Caterers were contacted and a local company agreed to provide finger food for the event. This cost will be $15,000 for the 1,200 attendees. We will be renting tables and a photo booth for entertainment as well as a DJ. All in all the total cost to put this reunion together will be between $35,000 and $40,000.
Some of our former employees are retired, unemployed, or receive very little income. Our planning committee would like to keep the cost of attending to a reasonable amount of $30. Our expenses currently exceed what we are collecting to attend. We would also like to offer assistance to those individuals who want to come but can't afford to attend.
We hope everyone who was a part of this special place will be able to come. The date is set for February 10, 2018.
