Dear all, I have a huge humanitarian favour to ask for. I am a surgeon currently working at the University of Chicago Hospital. As you know, India is witnessing an unprecedented COVID crisis with approximately 400,000 reported cases/day and 3500 reported deaths. The reported numbers are only a fraction of the real numbers. The whole country has turned into a graveyard as if there is an ongoing war.

A substantial number of patients are dying not because of severe disease but due to the lack of basic medical facilities, including oxygen, ICU beds and essential medicines. There is a considerable deficit, which is hard to fill. Each help seems like a drop in the ocean. Also, amidst the chaos, it is hard to ensure that the resources reach the dying people in time.
To begin with, I have initiated a direct drive to help two hospitals that are primarily taking care of such patients, namely, the Indian Mission of Medical Science Society and Sudha Hospital. These hospitals are located in Talwandi & Jagpura, Kota, in the state of Rajasthan. They have been catering Hadoti region of Rajasthan with almost 3 million population, for the past 22 years. Collectively, they are 250 bedded tertiary care hospitals. IMMSS is a non-profit organisation with two affiliated hospitals namely Sudha General Hosp and Sudha Cancer Institute & Research Centre. Sudha Cancer Institute has been providing entirely free treatment for cancer patients for the past four years. The General Hospital is currently treating COVID patients at a minimal cost. The doctors, nurses and all hospital staff are trying their best to serve patients with this deadly and gruesome illness; however, their efforts are constantly being thwarted by the lack of basic supplies. Owing to the increased number of cases and limited resources, hospitals are forced to PRIORITIZE pts [the sorting of patients (as in WAR FIELD) according to the urgency of their need for care]. There is SIGNIFICANT LACK of BEDS, OXYGEN and VENTILATORS. People are dying as NO BEDS ARE AVAILABLE. (BBC Patients dying without OXYGEN)
The primary and most critical limiting resources are oxygen, ventilators and ICU beds. Currently, there is an oxygen plant in one of the hospitals capable of generating 50 cylinders of oxygen per day, but what we need is at least 100 more cylinders per day. To fill this gap, we need to procure oxygen concentrators and oxygen cylinders. The approximate cost is 50,000 USD.
In addition, at least 10 ventilators and 20 ICU beds plus monitors for sicker COVID patients are needed. Currently, there are 12 ventilators in ICUs, which is much less than required. Each ventilator costs approximately 16000 USD (total 160,000), monitor costs 1400 USD (total 28000) and beds cost 500 USD (total 10000).
We are continuously uploading the receipts of the costs incurred as proof of the funds being utilized in the care of COVID patients.
