Who’s Lucas?
Lucas is one of the brightest, most curious, most ambitious, and most positive people I have ever met in my life. He also happens to be my very best 12th grade student. Lucas has been president of his classroom since 7th grade and has received straight A’s through all of secondary school. This year, he received the highest grade of all the 12th graders in both English, and Math, and passed the rest of his disciplines with flying colors. He’s my star English speaker and is extraordinarily dedicated to his education. Lucas often spends his weekends studying grammar and vocabulary and arrives excited to class armed with questions about the difference between subtle grammatical points and a random smattering of vocabulary words to define that he’s picked up from readings, news clippings, and movies watched.
Over this past year, Lucas diligently volunteered in Namacurra’s community library every week. He also was the backbone of my English Theater team, showing up on time for every single practice, helping us win 2nd place of all the teams in the province, and ultimately winning Best Actor of all participants. His performance truly was amazing and every day, I find myself overwhelmed with pride in his dedication and passion.
What makes Lucas special?
The education system in Mozambique is very different from our education system here. Students are not held to any real standards of excellence or truly expected to apply any real, critical thinking or hard work to their studies. Passing to the next grade means receiving 40%. Rampant corruption within the school systems allows for students who don’t come to class or do school work and fail exams to pass by way of bribes and nepotism. Homework is rarely given, and when given, rarely completed. Lucas’ motivation, drive, and hunger to learn, achieve, and succeed comes purely from within and this passion and ambition sets him light years apart from his peers.
He sounds amazing! So…what can I do?
I recently learned that Lucas’ neglectful and absuive father and stepmother have kicked him out of their family’s home. He now lives in an abandoned house and a few generous community members are supporting him with food money. His father will not help Lucas continue his education. When I ask Lucas how he’s doing and how he’s feeling, he tells me it’s actually a good thing that he’s in his own space. Now, he’ll have the peace and quiet he needs to study for University entrance exams and improve his English. He never stops smiling. I am certain that given the opportunity to further his education, he’ll achieve extraordinary success and will make it his life’s mission to give back this community. I feel absolutely compelled to give him that chance.
Please help me get Lucas through college. $5,810 will cover all of Lucas’ tuition, living, and travel expenses over the course of 4 years at University Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, Mozambique (the best university in Mozambique). He wants to become an English translator, and a University education would provide Lucas with the economic security and bright future that he truly deserves.
How the funds will be spent over 4 years:
Entrance exam registration fees: $40
Transport to and from exams: $10
University registration Fee: $80
Fee to take each class/discipline: $500
Medical & legal documents: $60
School Materials & books: $1,000
Rent: $500
Transportation to/from Zambezia & Maputo: $800
Food (off campus), electricity, home maintenance, bed, etc: $2,400
Lunch on campus: $220
Emergency $: $200
4 Year Total: $5,810
What's the withdrawal plan?
I will withdraw money from gofundme into my American bank account. For the remainder of my time as a Peace Corps Volunteer and resident in Mozambique, I will transfer money from my American account into my Mozambican bank account, and then use e-banking to transfer money to Lucas as needed, in concordance with the budget detailed above. Over the course of 2019-2021, I will wire Lucas money via Western Union as needed, in concordance with the budget detailed above. All money transfers will be contingent upon receipts for all previous purchases.
Any donation, no matter how small, is hugely appreciated.
