Send AF Staff to HRC Conference

Tax deductible
Send 6 Achievement First staff to attend HRC's Time to Thrive Conference in Orlando, FL!

The Conference
The Human Rights Campaign's annual Time to Thrive Conference is the country's largest event for LGBTQ+ educators and other professionals serving LGBTQ+ youth.  Leaders from national queer youth organizations, such as GLSEN, the Trevor Project, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and Lambda Legal will be hosting workshops on a spectrum of topics relevant to LGBTQ+ youth.

Who We Are
Achievement First is a nonprofit public charter school network with 34 schools serving students from low-income communities in Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island.  In the past year the organization's LGBTQ+ Staff Community Group, AF Stand Out, has grown to over 100 members, and has led staff to participate in the Brooklyn Pride 5K, Ally Week, and National Coming Out Day.  Through the Stand Out monthly newsletter, Stand Out supplies teachers and administrators with news and resources relevant to LGBTQ+ students and families.

The Need to Go
Now that Achievement First has built up a formidable community among its LGBTQ+ staff, the organization is ready to research, develop, and effectively execute policies critical for our LGBTQ+ students, staff, and families.  This includes developing trainings for all staff on issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity, incorporating themes of gender identity and sexual orientation into K-12 curricula, setting policies for schools on how to affirm and communicate student and staff pronouns, and providing the support structures for LGBTQ+ student groups to thrive on our campuses.

We do not have the resources or expertise yet to tackle these initiatives, but we believe attending the Time to Thrive Conference will connect us with valuable contacts and empower us with critical resources that will catalyze our progress on these fronts.

The Cost
To make this conference affordable for our teachers and staff, we need to raise some funds.  Attendees will finance their own airfare, but we are looking to raise money for registration fees, accommodations, and local ground transportation.  We are budgeting for 6 Achievement First staff.  This breaks down as follows:

-3 rooms at the conference hotel for 2 nights each, at $175/night (tax incl.).
-Registration fees for 6 staff at the nonprofit rate of $149/person.
-Ground transportation to and from Orlando International Airport, at $50 each way.

Total: $2,080
Timing: Funds raised by December 1st, to secure early bird registration rates.
