African Vulture SAFE
Donation protected
Vultures need our help! Worldwide, vultures are are the most threatened group of birds with 16 of the 23 facing extinction. In Africa, vultures are in crisis. Africa’s vultures have declined by an average of 62% during the last 30 years. In parts of Western Africa, some species have declined more than 95%.
The most pressing threats facing African vultures are poisoning, habitat loss, collisions with energy infrastructures and lack of food availability. The fate of vultures is not only tied to that of many other key African species, like elephants and lions, but also to human health. As scavengers, or nature's clean up crew, vultures play a huge role in the spread of disease. Healthy vultures = healthy humans!
SAFE—or Saving Animals From Extinction—is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums initiative intended to coordinate and focus the conservation efforts of Zoos & Aquariums across North America in order to increase conservation impact. African vultures were officially selected as a SAFE species in March 2018.
Your generous donation will go to the African vulture SAFE program which has partnered with four field projects in:
Kenya: The Peregrine Fund
Tanzania: North Carolina Zoo and WCS
Botswana: Denver Zoo, Kalahari Research and Conservation, and Raptors Botswana
South Africa: VulPro
All funds are distributed equally between the four field partner sites.
