AFL Masters is an all-inclusive footy league for men and women aged 32 and over. The Women's Vic Metro team is seeking help to fund players travelling to Townsville for the National Carnival on September 28. Costs are high and we want to enable as many women as possible to attend. Background to AFL Masters This year, with the increased profile of the AFLW, 10 Women's teams from across Melbourne competed in a fortnightly over 35's competition through the AFL Masters. The games are played in great spirit and celebrate the diversity of women in age, fitness, background and experience. Ages range from 35 through to 65. National Carnival Each year, a National Carnival is hosted by different cities around Australia where teams come together from every state and territory to represent Metro and Country areas. Since 2016, Vic Metro has been represented at the Carnival by a passionate group of women. Despite being the birthplace of footy, this year Victoria is struggling to field a whole women's team due to the commitment of a week-long carnival, travel to Townsville, accomodation and playing costs - on top of lost income and time away from the family for that week. We have heard from a number of women who would dearly love to represent Victoria however the cost is prohibitive and they have been unable to commit. We are hoping to raise enough funds to provide a hardship scholarship to these women to defray at least some portion of the costs, On average it would be costing between $1500 and $2500 each. For the men's footy teams, who have been attending these carnivals for years, it is more akin to an end of year footy trip, and culturally we are used to giving husbands and partners a week away with their mates. For women, there are so many other hurdles and cost is just one we can influence. We are hoping to raise at least $5000 which will enable at least additional players to attend. Any donation that can help us reach or surpass this goal will be greatly appreciated by the team, especially those who are currently unable to attend. We are hoping to reach our base goal by Friday 6 September, however will keep the fundraising open until Grand Final day as the Carnival kicks off on 28 September in Townsville. The money will go directly to the players to be used against flights, accommodation, meals and transport. We would really appreciate any support you can provide - lets get the ball rolling with any amount you can spare!
