Library for Children's Home in Nepal

Donation protected
Namaste! Hello!

My name is Megan and I am trying to raise funds to build a library at the children’s home in Kathmandu, Nepal that I am working at for the summer.

There are currently around 2,000 street children living in Nepal, with at least 1,000 of those in Kathmandu. 400 new street children arrive in the city each year looking to escape the abuse and neglect of their families, or to escape the cycle of poverty that traps so many in Nepal’s rural countryside and villages. With the average annual income of a Nepalese person coming in at around $700, many parents send their children to the city to beg or look for work. Other children end up on the harsh streets of Kathmandu because their parents have died and they have no family at all. These children, mostly boys between the ages of 5 and 16, make their living by scouring and collecting plastic bottles from garbage dumps and begging. Many engage in drugs and other criminal activity, such as theft and prostitution, to survive.

Papa’s Home is a children’s home in Kupondol, Kathmandu, Nepal, that provides a home to 24 children. These children are former street children, orphans, or come from vulnerable homes with parents that were abusive or neglectful and did not take care of them. This home provides a caring, loving, family environment for these kids so that they can thrive and be loved and dignified members of society. These children are provided with shelter, clothing, food, an education, and most importantly, love and a community of other children and adults who care for and support them in every way.

But what don’t these children have? They don’t have Ipods, or computers, or cell phones. They don’t spend their days playing video games or watching MTV or playing games on their Iphones. They have fun the good old-fashioned way… by playing soccer/football outside, by coloring and drawing and making up imaginary games, and most importantly, by READING! Yes, these children, despite all the odds being against them, coming from some of the harshest circumstances and backgrounds, are 24 of the smartest, most inquisitive children I have ever met. They love to learn and read. They speak both Nepali and English, even the little ones. Pretty impressive, right? The one thing they don’t have is access to books. The importance of reading and education for these kids, trying to break the cycle of poverty that they have been born into, can't be overstated. The only way they can do this is through learning and education.

So please consider donating to help me build a library for the kids! We will be completely transforming a spare room in the home into a fabulous library full of books, games, and other great hands-on learning tools. I hope to purchase books for every age group (the kids here range in age from 4 to 15) that will encourage building reading skills and learning for all ages. I would love to help make this dream a reality for these amazing children, but I can only do it with your help! Every dollar/euro helps! Thank you!!!
