Caring for Mary Soza

On May 21st 2014, your friend and co-worker, Mary Soza, was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease (CJD). CJD is a very rare degenerative neurological disease that is currently incurable and is always fatal within a short time after diagnosis.
Mary has been suffering from various symptoms of this disease and slowly deteriorating for many months, while doctors continued to run test after test trying to determine the cause. CJD is difficult to diagnose and extremely rare, only one in one million people are diagnosed with it each year. CJD progresses very quickly and she has had some symptoms for many months, so we are unsure how much time she has left. Visits from friends and family always boost her spirits and we always welcome these visits.
Because this disease is incurable, there is very little that can be done to help Mary other than trying to keep her as comfortable as possible as it progresses. People with CJD will eventually lose all physical and mental capabilities and as such, caring for people with this disease is extremely difficult. The best thing we can do to help Mary at this time is to try to keep her comfortable in her home as long as possible, however, this requires hiring nearly full time in home professional care.
Since Mary’s diagnosis, many people have reached out to us and asked how they can help out Mary in her time of need. One of the ways that people can help is by helping to offset the costs of in home care, as these costs will continue to mount for the family over the coming months. Any type of donation, whether it is monetary or through well wishes and prayer is greatly appreciated by Mary and her family.
