This fund, started for Adam Bandemer by his family, is a place to donate for all who want to support Adam and his family through this tough time of uncertainty of his outcome and the long road ahead.
Adam was in an accident on January 8th, 2015 while he and his friend were on their way fishing. He was the passenger and they rear-ended a snowplow due to whiteout conditions. Please see the attached article for more details on the accident http://bit.ly/1FCcULX .
He was wearing his seat belt. Adam was unconscious at the scene but breathing on his own. He was brought to Staples hospital where they intubated, inserted a breathing tube, and airlifted him to the St. Cloud Hospital. We were told he was breathing on his own and they intubated to protect his airway. Staples only had him for 10 minutes before sending to St. Cloud.
Adams injuries include a laceration to his right ear and slightly above on his skull. He has a right skull fracture, left frontal bleed. Right pupil is larger than the left. Left frontal contusion. He withdraws from painful stimulus but does not follow any commands. He has opened his eyes some but has not focused.
When we arrived the ER was preparing to transfer Adam to the ICU. We were very anxious to get there as the Neurosurgeon was waiting to consult with us to give us the details of Adam's injuries. We spent a lot of time in the ICU waiting room! The plastic surgeon came up and fixed his ear. The ICU nurses were getting Adam situated and assessing him. We just sat worried!!
Dr. Falloon, the neurosurgeon spoke with us and this is our interpretation. Adam sustained a major traumatic brain injury. Our goal now is to prevent a secondary injury due to bleeding and swelling. The first CT scan showed bleeding inside the brain around the caudal 8 area. We are at a very critical point and swelling can happen up to 72 hours post injury. He said he was debating placing a ventriculostomy to drain excess fluid and monitor cerebral pressures. Our next critical test would be a second CT scan at 8:30pm to see if there was increase in bleeding or evidence of increased swelling.
The 2nd CT scan was good. It showed the bleed was stable and stayed the same. Dr. Falloon did not feel the swelling was enough to warrant placing a ventriculostomy. Adam had good spaces in his ventricles, no mid-line shifting and the "wrinkles" in the brain were still good. All very good signs! Now we wait until morning for another CT scan.
His third CT scan was again stable. Dr. Falloon said he is considering his brain injury an axonal shearing injury. He is in a coma. All we can do is be here with Adam. Supporting him, loving him, being with him, talking to him and most importantly praying for him. His brain needs time to heal.
Adams road to recovery is going to be long as we have been told this journey is going to be a marathon not a sprint. Thank you for your love, prayers and generosity as we all go through this most difficult time together.
