Adam and Michael's apartment destroyed by fire

In the early morning of March 6, 2021 a fire broke out in the basement of our apartment building at 451 Broadway in Troy, NY.  We smelled smoke and our kitchen began to fill with smoke. Another tenant in the building was in the hallway shouting "fire" we went out of our apartment and along with the other tenant began to alert the other occupants to evacuate the building.  The building is a total loss and all of our possessions were lost except for the clothes we were wearing.  We were able to rescue our cat.

I am Mark Retzlaff,  the organizer of this Go Fund Me campaign, organized on behalf of my sons Adam and Michael Retzlaff.  Around 2:00
am Saturday morning March 6th, we received a call from our son Adam asking to come pick them up as their apartment building
was burning.  Leaving our home in Cohoes and travelling on 787 toward Troy I could see the large cloud of smoke over the city. As I
approached Green Island flames were visible inside the smoke cloud.  I arrived at Broadway and 5th Avenue and at first was unable to
locate my sons.  They had used their landlord's cell phone to call as their phones were left behind.  I was able to reach them through their
landlord and take them to our home in Cohoes where they are currently living until they can find new housing.  

Like the other tenants in the building, our sons lost everything.  They will use the funds raised to replace the entirety of their home, living
room, bedroom and kitchen furniture and appliances, electronics, an extensive library of books, bikes and so on.  Sadly, like so many
others, there are sentimental items that have been lost that are irreplaceable.  The entirety of funds raised will be transferred to their bank accounts via electronic funds transfer.

My wife and I want to thank everyone who has so generously donated to this  fund raising effort.  We cannot adequately express our
appreciation.  Beyond the money raised, the expressions of sympathy, prayers, well wishes and offers of help have been abundant.
