Help me realize my dream at Cornell

My name is Nicole Casal and in the Fall of 2014 I will be a Freshman at Cornell College pursuing Business Management and Music. I was given a Music scholarship at Cornell College, and it covers some of my tuition, but the harsh reality is the scholarship doesn’t cover all my expenses. Scholarships, grants, work-study and loans still leave me short $5,500. I have been working and saving, but I am still short the funds to start this coming September.
Going to college is important to me because I want to continue my education and share my passion for music.
My mother immigrated to Los Angeles from the Philippines in 1996. The circumstances she came from were not good, but the transition to life here was brutal. She experienced life on the street and found herself homeless and a single mother. Her response was to work as hard as she could at whatever she could find. I have no doubt that I inherited my strong work ethic and perseverance from her. I was born while she lived in transitional housing for homeless women and children.
Alexandria House (www.alexandriahouse.org) was my first home in the U.S. I am living proof that some people, given just a little help, will make the most of it and work to take their lives to the next level. I believe my life is an example of the American Dream.
My mother’s courage and love created a place for me where I could find my passion - music. I am a member of the first generation in my family to go to college. Together with my brother, we are the hope for the dream my family has sought since coming here.
