My name is Lisa Arcangel, and my hometown, the heart of my upbringing, Lahaina, has been completely decimated by the fires that ravaged Maui this week. Lahaina is a small town, meaning everyone knows everyone. Every member of the community is a friend, a classmate, an uncle, a cousin - an integral part of who each of us are. It’s a small island, you grow up together, you live together, you thrive together. And right now, we are all hurting together.

The fires have destroyed hundreds of structures - dozens of which are my own family’s. The Arcangel, Balmores, and Webb families have lost everything when their homes burned to the ground. Several were injured evacuating from the area. My family is without power, water, and medical aid. As I sit watching the destruction from the mainland, all I can feel is helpless as well as discouraged at the lack of support, resources, and emergency services being offered for my family. Devastated, exhausted, and terrified locals and family members are the ones who are putting in the effort to recover bodies, track down loved ones, and scrounge up resources and supplies.
