Aaliyah road to recovery

Aaliyah and her twin brother was born at 32 weeks. Aaliyah was 3 lbs 4 oz. At 10 days old doctors discovered that Aaliyah had a heart defect called transposition of the great arteries. This defect altered her ability to send oxygen to her body and affected her breathing . At 11 days old Aaliyah developed a condition called NEC. She then had her first surgery on her intestines. She had most of her large intestine removed because of lack of oxygenated blood flow whiched caused them to die. The next day doctors seen that her intestines were continuing to die. She then had her second surgery. A third of her small intestine was then removed and her stomach was left open for further evaluation and to help with the swelling of her intestines. Surgeons then told us that Aaliyah would probably not survive that week. With lots of prayers and support from family and friends, Aaliyah made it through that week and the doctors were able to close her up. She continued to struggle with her oxygen levels because she became septic and with her heart defect. We continued to have nurses and doctors telling us that she would not make it with that much intestine. At one point we had doctors tell us that we should just take her of life support. Couple days later Aaliyah woke up and her oxygen levels stabilized. About 2 weeks into her hospital stay, after many tests and procedures doctors discover that Aaliyah developed a blood clot in her leg and she had fungal balls in her left kidney. They told us that it would take weeks to months for her fungal infection to resolve. Her fungal infection was resolved 1 week later. At one month of age Aaliyah under went a procedure to her heart that involved a balloon to help with her oxygenation. Aaliyah is currently on IV nutrition to help her grow and is intubated help her breath. She is currently a little over 5lbs and is waiting for her heart surgery.  All money donated will help with her medical costs.  Despite all of her challenges Aaliyah is a happy little baby girl.
