AAi & partners Malawi covid response appeal

Donation protected
After being relatively spared by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Malawi is now being swept by a second, fast-spreading wave that is quickly overwhelming the healthcare system. The hotspots of the outbreak are in all the major cities and towns, including Lilongwe in the centre, Mzuzu in the north, and Zomba and Blantyre in the south.

The most critical priorities now are to protect the frontline staff and the rural population where COVID has not spread much.  The already under resourced health system is overwhelmed and the situation calls for immediate support. Currently there are over 19,000 active cases and more than 587 people have died.

Further, it is also reported that gender based violence and other forms of abuse are on the rise, including threat to life of albinos.  In 2020, more than 1213 girls were reported pregnant during the closure of schools in response to the first wave.  In the circumstances, the general population is experiencing not only grief but also mental health challenges which need to be addressed holistically.

AFRIAUS ILEAC: INSPIRE LEAD EDUCATE AND ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE INC (also known as AAi)  https://afriausileac.org/  , together with several Malawi partner organisations,  is responding to this situation in answer  to the call made by His Excellency Dr Lazarus Chakwera, the President of Malawi, for urgent response.  AAi has been collaborating with a number of organizations in Australia, delivering food relief packages and other essential needs to Africans and multicultural communities across Victoria since August 2020 through a project called LUVPACKS.

Australia based AAi, through its Malawi chapter, together with PAADN and VAOMAF are now collaborating with Malawian local NGO/NFP organizations such as FCR, CEWAG, YETOD, MZUDO and MMCC, to provide essential hygiene materials, food relief packages, medical kits to health facilities, mental health and wellbeing support, and to mount a behaviour change campaign to tackle misinformation so that vulnerable and rural populations, including widows, orphans and persons living with disabilities are well informed to reduce the spread and mitigate the impact of COVID-19. This initiative will support the nation’s prevention strategy. . All funds raised will go towards this cause.

Join us in this Malawi COVID-19 response appeal, no matter how small or big your donation may be. It will make an important difference in someone’s life. Little is much when you give it away in love and empathy. We hope that you will donate towards this cause and share this appeal with your networks. A report of use of these funds will be made available to donors (individuals, organisations, businesses, departments, governments) periodically.

Together we can go far. Stay safe.
