Study Abroad in South Africa

Hello everyone! My name is Lester Polty Jr. and I am currently a junior I.T Management major and Anthropology minor at the University of Notre Dame. I was recently accepted into my University’s South Africa study abroad program, which takes place from May 12th – June 1st. In addition to the program, I want to maximize this opportunity abroad by also partaking in research while in South Africa.

The study abroad program focuses on development in South Africa and explores how many of the nation's modern struggles have been shaped by various cultural, historical and social psychological influences. The program consists of coursework that serve as an introduction to South Africa's history and culture, as well as guest speakers and different cultural excursion to immerse students into and provide more in-depth understanding on the nation's current situation. More importantly, this program includes service placements, allowing students to tackle some of South Africa’s societal issues.

In my research project, I plan to examine business culture in South Africa, focusing specifically on conditions since South Africa adopted a democratic government model in 1994. Through observations and literature review, I intend to reveal how cultural beliefs and practices become integrated into business policy and daily business activities. My observations will occur in Cape Town and Johannesburg and will consist of a cross-sector analysis of various businesses in the region.

As anthropology minor, this study abroad opportunity is important to me because it expands my intercultural competence. My research complements my business education by affording me the opportunity to learn how culture can impact business ethics in another international location. I aim to uncover implementable practices that will aid business organizations in fostering more diverse and inclusive work-spaces.

All the things I hope to experience and accomplish come with a price – my one limiting factor. However, I am determined to not let this prevent me from achieving greater heights, which is why I am asking you for a kind donation. Regardless the amount, I would truly appreciate any contribution that can be made towards funding my opportunity. If you cannot afford to donate, simply liking and sharing my page would still be extremely helpful. Thanks for your time and I hope you have a wonderful day!
