Katie's Surgery & Recovery Fund

You may know Katie from growing up in Macon with her.  You may have taken a cooking class at Robinson Home and had her as your chef instructor.  You may have read her writings on the Southern Bon Vivant blog as their chef contributor.

In her 36 years in Macon, you've probably run across her smiling face at some point.  She loves Macon and it shows.

After bouncing from one job to another, Katie decided she wanted to become a chef, started culinary school, and didn't look back.  At school is where I met her. She liked my backpack and I liked her blonde hair.  We embarked on our culinary adventure together.

The day I asked Katie to marry me, we found out her mother had Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer.  After chemotherapy and surgery, her mom is still fighting and is winning.

After years of being uninsured, symptoms too gruesome to post to the internet drove Katie to become a patient at the Macon Volunteer Clinic.  Then a routine pap smear came back abnormal.  After a lot more tests, it was discovered that, while Katie didn't have cancer yet, she did have Carcinoma In Situ; it is precancer.  Had more time gone by, it would've developed into cervical cancer.

It was determined she'd need major surgery to keep cancer from developing.  On Monday, March 23rd, 2015 at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, she's scheduled to have a Radical Hysterectomy, a double Salpingectomy, an Oopherectomy, an Apendectomy, plus the removal of lymph nodes.

By some divine stroke, we signed Katie up for health insurance through the Healthcare.gov Marketplace just before the deadline passed.  This was one week before the first test results came back.

However, a pair of newlywed chefs starting out are doing just that... starting out.

The insurance we can afford is already cutting into our meager savings.  The travel to and from appointments in Atlanta to be cared for by one of the most highly-recommended Gynecologic Oncologist in the Southeast adds to the cost of care.

Katie will be out of work for at least 4 weeks.

Many of you have reached out and asked what you can do to help.  This is the biggest help you can give at this point.  A few dollars from a few people would go a long way to easing the battle we're about to fight.

Share this campaign as much as you can.

Katie is and always will be #maconstrong
