Single Mom Seeks PhD

I am a single mother of three children, the youngest of which is four years old, and I have been offered a position in a doctorate program to continue my education and research in structural inequality, reproductive health, and autonomous decision-making. This amazing opportunity includes free tuition and a stipend for my service as a graduate teaching and research assistant. Unfortunately, I do have the money to repair our vehicle, pack our belongings, and travel 1800 miles to a new home. I am unable to afford application fees and a deposit in order to secure an apartment. I will be selling almost everything we own, but it will not be enough to cover our costs and I am hoping to receive support from my extended community.

I initially returned to Oregon State University to further my education, expand my career opportunities, and provide a better life for my children following ten years of service in the fields of child development and maternal health. While pursuing my academic goals I earned several scholarships and awards, served the university through membership in advisory boards, and performed leadership roles in social justice organizations including the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance. I have exceeded academic expectations despite socioeconomic barriers and a lack of social support systems and I anticipate continued success throughout my career at the University of Kansas.

The items listed in my wish list are solely for travel, but I would gladly welcome additional support because we are currently behind in all bills including car insurance, electricity, water, phone, and garbage because my financial aid has ended for the year and I will not receive additional funding until late August or early September.
