A TRIP TO TORONTO SICK KIDS

Donation protected
Zackary just turned eleven and he’s getting ready to make his third trip to Toronto Sick Kids Hospital.

For most 11 years olds from a small province like New Brunswick a trip to the big city of Toronto conjures up the sights and sounds that only a big city has. The CN Tower, Blue Jays, Raptors and Maple Leaf hockey. Thousands of new restaurants to try, hundreds of cultures blended into the great city of Toronto. The people, the lights, the sounds.

For Zack, although he has been lucky enough to see some of those things on previous visits, it also brings back some really negative memories. Chemo, radiation, pain, transplants, isolation, sickness, pokes, prods, and more pain.

Zack has been fighting this leukaemia battle since he was a young boy of four. With a couple remissions it seemed like all the hospital stays and procedures were worth it.

But the leukaemia has returned. Zack told his parents he was done. He is sick and tired of being sick and tired. He didn’t want any more treatment. He’s only 11 but he knows what a decision like that means and was ready to take on the consequences.

Recently the IWK and TSK hospitals have been conferencing on Zack’s course of treatment. Zack’s options are very limited (slim to none) but they would like him to try one more time in Toronto. Will there be pain and sickness? YES. But also there is a small amount of HOPE and that is the lifeline Zack has decided to cling to. He knows what he’s in for so he has made a very brave decision. We love and support him for having that courage.

So, with all that said that means Jaret could be out there for 5-6 months with Zack. He’s already been in Halifax probably 95% of the time since January. Jaret has not left his son’s side since all of this began years ago. Even though some expenses for the parents are covered by programs through the hospital, not everything is, and some things are at a reduced cost. Jaret’s been away since January and may not get back until January or February next year. He is feeling this financially. He says he will be with his son even if it means he loses everything.

I think this is where some of us can help. $10 here, $20 there, it adds up and I know my brother is really struggling right now. To have all this on his mind and financial worries too, our family just wants to help lessen his load and will do what we can but this is a time where the community could step in again and give Jaret a little peace of mind while he tends to what is most important right now, being with his son while he fights for his life.

If you are in a position to contribute to living expenses, travel expenses and video games (those hospital hours drag by) our family would really appreciate it.

If you are not in a position to donate financially, please keep those prayers and positive vibes coming their way. We need all the luck we can get to kick cancer’s butt again.

Please share and spread the word.
