A Riders Family is in deep need.

My name is Paul Engle, And I have taken it upon myself to help a fellow Seattle based rider who is in deep need. I have become friends through our amazing community with Will Altieri for a few months now. We have bonded on all things Unicycles and especially the Monster Pro. He has been a solid human being who has never asked for a thing and has been a positive force in the world. I have had to convince him to let me create this Fund for him and his family. Below is his story on what he is going through and what happened to him. We have a large community, and perhaps we can rise up and help the Altieri Family. Lets Go!

Here’s What Happened

“Its’s my wife, son and I, and I'm the sole provider for our household. I work as the service manager for a company and now I'm being told that I won't be able to start attempting to bear any weight on my leg for 3-6 months after my second surgery. That's bed rest for around half a year. This has cost me my Job and the ability to provide for my family.

I was riding my EUC to Starbucks as I do every single day to get my wife and I coffee while on lunch break. Around 4 minutes into the ride, I notice a chemical smell and seen some smoke. I dismissed it as I was on a busy road and sometimes smoke comes from below. Not even 10 seconds later, my temperature on the app was through the roof and my pants were melting. Literally melting. The app said I was going 72mph! when I obviously was nowhere close. Something went VERY wrong. I couldn't stop,
could do anything as it cutout and threw me across 3 lanes of traffic, I slid to a stop over a hundred feet from where the initial incident occurred.

When I got up, my leg immediately buckled halfway between my ankle and knee. My bone came out of my skin in 3 places. I fell to the ground and became delirious.
The fire department arrived on scene as a police officer was trying to extinguish the wheels fire.
They could not find a pulse in my foot at all. It was going cold.
They immediately cut off the dual axis protectors and did an on-scene emergency reduction. After a bit, they confirmed minor blood flow restoration and placed it into an air cast.
I was placed into the c-spine brace as my spine was severely bruised. I had decreased breath sounds in my left lung.

I was taken to Harborview Medical Center (a level 1 trauma center) they lost the pulse in my foot again. They immediately began the more extensive trauma workup and when they cleared my c-spine, they then went for an emergency reduction after confirming the severe injury with x-rays and a CT Scan. The medical names for the injuries are open tibia and fibula fractures. My bones are so severely broken that my leg was shorter as the bones shifted upwards towards my knee. They pulled down extremely hard and began manipulating it. This took 30-35 minutes. Once blood flow was positively restored and they confirmed proper capillary refill - I was sent to surgery.

However, surgery failed as the initial damage was too much. The swelling was too bad. They had no way to put my skin back together if they kept at it. So they opted for an external fixator with 5 pins. Two in my foot (heel and the ankle) and then 3 higher up in the leg.

I was in the hospital for 5 days. Surgery cannot happen until at least November 3rd. After surgery, I will be in the hospital for around 3 weeks.

I currently have no movement in my toes or foot. I can feel very few things but what I do feel, is an intense burning pain.

Work is not providing assistance and my apartment building understands the issue - but they cannot let rent go unpaid.

The medications cost me an additional $72 per week and I have to purchase refills every week of a different lifesaving medication that I have to be on for 6 weeks which is a blood thinning shot. Each refill is $62 per week.

We now have to pay rent, bills, medical transports, medications and somehow still buy groceries when I am not even able to put my foot to the ground for 3-6 months after my next surgery. I don’t know what to do"

That’s It

Can we Rise up and help the Altieri Family? When I blew my knee out years ago I didn’t have insurance and I had to start a gofundme myself in order to afford it. If it hadn’t been for that help, I would not have been able to get use of my knee back and I definitely wouldn’t be riding today. So let’s join as a community and see what we can really make happen.
